Kakadu Plum Gets TGA Tick – May, 2008
Following independent approaches to the TGA – The Australian Therapeutic Goods administration body – Kakadu Plum – INCI – Terminalia ferdinandiana is now permitted in medical based products requiring TGA approval. Stipulations as to appropriate use have been allowed by the TGA only when the Kakadu Plum fruit flesh is in a dry form or used as an aqueous extraction of the fruit flesh.
The TGA had approved the use of Kakadu Plum when used as an active ingredient of a medicinal product back in 2003 when it received an application from a sponsor, to have Kakadu plum concentrate (KPC) evaluated as a new complementary medicine substance for use in listed medicines. The sponsor proposed to use KPC in a range of listed vitamin and mineral supplements as a source of vitamin C.
At present the Kakadu Plum has a very limited natural distribution, localised in the northern regions of the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia. The fresh fruit, seeds, and a drink prepared from the fruit of Kakadu plum are traditional foods of Aboriginal peoples in northwestern Australia.
The use of KPC would be similar to that of rose hips, blackcurrant, and acerola cherry extracts, already approved substances for use in listed medicines, as sources of natural vitamin C, but the fruit of Kakadu plum has higher amounts of vitamin C than other known fruit.
SeaFlower-Australia uses an aqueous extraction of the KPC in its range of Rainforest skin and hair care products. Research has shown that naturally occurring VitaminC is a potent source of antioxidants. Further tests have indicated the when mixed with other components, noted for their moisturising qualities, the presence of the Kakadu Plum conditions skin and helps keep it looking younger and an appearance of subtleness.
In the case of the SeaFlower-Australia hair care range, a shampoo and conditioner contain levels of this naturally occurring VitaminC which assist in the removal of dry skin, dandruff and minor dermatological conditions. It also promotes a healthy hair follicle which in turn leads to the production of healthy looking hair.
It has also been reported that using the SeaFlower-Australia Rainforest shampoo on dogs has some affect on reducing the incidence of so called ‘ Queensland Itch’ – a minor dermatological condition emerging as a result of flea, mosquito bites or a dry climate.
