Why drinking soft (soda) drinks like Coke and Pepsi may be killing you! July’09
Virtually everywhere now you will be subjected to products which contribute to the deterioration of the human immune system.
Each year Americans drink the equivalent of nearly 600 cans of soda (soft) drink each containing an average of ten, yes that’s 10, teaspoons of refined white sugar.
Every day the Coca Cola Company sells in excess of one billion cans of soft drink on Planet Earth. Each can contains an average of ten teaspoons of pure refined white sugar along with a range of other nefarious chemicals, most shown to lead to premature death as a result of numerous avoidable illnesses. (Put aside the affects of aluminium mining for the moment)
Here is what happens to your body for a full 60 minutes after you have consumed a can of Coca Cola. This is frightening so hold onto your seat:
In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavour allowing you to keep it down.
20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centres of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
>60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
>60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that were headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pee’d away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

But then there is more:
Let’s take a look at some of the other major components of a can of soft drink:
Phosphoric Acid: This can interfere with the body’s ability to utilise calcium, which may lead to osteoporosis ( and thinning of bone density) and softening of the teeth.
Sugar: It is a proven fact sugar can increase insulin levels, which may lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging and other side effects. Most soft drinks include over 100 percent of the RDA of sugar. Take the Ayurvedic approach- a balance of sweet, sour and savoury.
Aspartame: This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soft drinks. There are nearly 100 documented health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures.
Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks can cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion and may cause breast lumps, birth defects, and perhaps some forms of cancer.
I see dozens of people each week, most looking for easily obtainable solutions to health issues. My response is so unmedical-because I am not a medical person- find balance in diet and focus more on the re-schooling the body’s gene nutrition with not only health ALKALINE based foods but also concentrated antioxidant based foods and drinks.
But I hope that Coke information scares the living day lights out of you.
Its time to come home to your pure and perfect self.

Beating Global Food Price Hikes
In Feng Shui terms we understand that we are in a 2-period now – fundamentally ‘back to basics’. Change is moving so fast to remove any/all ‘unnatural infrastructures’ around the production and supply of foodstuffs. Where SeaFlower-Australia is based is one of UNESCO’s Global Biosphere Environments – one step away from World Heritage Listing.
One of the most successful community driven Farmers Markets in Australia is based right here in this pristine part of the world. Headed up by founder Shane Stanley who says economic innovations are pushing all of us to look local, re-localise and boost food production.
“This is all about making the Sunshine Coast Australia’s first food-independent region,’’ Mr Stanley said.
“I question why should food grown on the Sunshine Coast need to be trucked to the Brisbane market 150 km’s away, purchased and trucked back here to be sold at inflated prices. New thought around this absurdity is about creating a more sustainable local food economy AND reducing the Carbon Footprint.
Shane Stanley is responding to growing concern about global hikes in food prices, the effects of large supermarket chain monopolies and the push for a central regional food market.
“I personally want to see a central food market established here so farmers can sell their product directly to retailers and consumers. This will go a long way towards cutting out food transport costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with getting food to the table.’’
Shane is part of innovative thought meetings charting the barriers to, and a course towards, rebuilding and boosting regional food production.
At a recent workshop held at the University of Sunshine Coast participants were told at present Australia’s food economy is dominated by the two supermarket chains – Woolworths and Coles. Their centralised buying and pricing policies have driven down the returns to small-scale farmers and effectively destroyed the local food production and marketing capability that existed in most areas until the 1960s. Understandably this has serious implications for food security as we move into a period of steadily rising energy prices, greater climate instability, and global food shortages. It has also driven many small farmers out of the industry.
The rest of the world might care to watch developments on the Sunshine Coast of the state of Queensland, Australia. Ask yourself: Is it time to go back to basics? Is it time for supermarkets to grow their own vegetables on the roofs of their buildings using solar energy and recycled water supplies? Is it time for Farmers Markets to move away from being a novelty attraction to a genuine means for an immediate community to sustain itself?

Note from the writer, Scott Mathias: I recall back in the 60’s growing up in New Zealand we used to go and buy our fruit from local orchards – there were no Farmers Markets in those days – but clearly remember that half way through that decade we were forbidden from buying directly from the grower because the recently formed Apple and Pear Marketing Board was given legislative power to control the sale of ALL apples and pears in New Zealand. This move was suppose to ‘get the growers the best prices’ – suffice to say that almost all of these family owned orchards ultimately went out of business as large multi-nationals became involved in orchard ownership in NZ. Bread was baked nearby and delivered by a boy riding a big black bike with an equally large wicker basket on the front. Locally produced milk was delivered to the door. Locally produced lamb and mutton was delivered to the door – perhaps we won’t see a return to those times as such but centralized Farmers Markets have a growing space in our ‘return to basics’ lives.
‘The Destruction of Wealth’
For many who have ‘had’ their wealth tied up in the stockmarket, commercial and residential real estate this time must be very painful. For others who have their $$IP tied to an SME or other, AND who have direct control over the fortunes of their enterprise, this time must be (is) EXCITING.
I read an article a moment ago – The Destruction of Wealth – by Alan Kohler, an Australian financial commentator. Its about the ‘Destruction of Wealth’ and the need to bring back a ‘balance’ between actual asset values and perceived asset values. Of course if one has a very Buddhist view of the value of assets, which is, that nothing has intrinsic $$ value only spiritual value, then, there is nothing to bother about right now, all is perfect!
Perhaps this is a time for balance to be regained – common sense to prevail and above all solid life ethics replace the greed and $$ hunger – I bet what will come from these times will be a truer form of life for humanity – something akin to ‘Peace on Earth’ (which is well overdue) and no more money changers tables being turned over and definitely no more ‘knashing of teeth ‘ and wailing. I know what I’d prefer.
From Scott Mathias – Creator of the SeaFlower-Australia range of Skin Health products and the NEW AuraGold Farms range of AntiOxidant Functional Foods. Note: Some years ago I visited the Ganges at dawn. I had the opportunity to float in front of the hundreds of Holy Men at dawn as they did their ‘puja’ – washed themselves immersing themselves in the waters of this Holy River – it was a moving experience as I made eye contact with many of these wonderful beings who to this day remain my brothers and perfect reflections.
Do2 NOW! – May, 2008
Low Carb is now a reality. No not low carbohydrate but LOW CARBON. The ‘buzz-craze’ back in the 70’s and 80’s was recycle and gradually people began to wake up to the fact that by recycling we could illuminate the need to reproduce thousands of tones of raw materials needed in the manufacturing process. Can the same happen with our LCF?
Recognising an LCF or Low Carbon Footprint is the new rage. Some corporates however have cottoned on to the fact that there is good PR mileage to be made from getting involved and others are genuine in their concerns that they are unnecessarily contributing to the ‘carbon weight’ of the planet.
We think it’s all about changing the way you think and consume. But what if we all consumed 2% less of all food, oil and energy – we tallied up our daily consumption – small and large business – consumers (you and me) and service providers – schools everyone – tallied up daily consumption by weight and consumed 2% less? What sort of difference would this make?
Oil prices hiking skyward may well be just what we needed to get us to think about consuming less. Already there is consumer backlash in the US as petrol there reaches US$4 a gallon and prices in Australia head towards AUD$2 a liter. May be who ever is leading the surge in oil prices ( and we see that the US Government has ceased stockpiling oil in a network of underground caverns in Louisiana and Texas) that a peak is about to be reached and back down to $20 a barrel the price of crude goes.It is possible!
It’s a hunch but we feel it’s all connected – consume less and less CO2 emissions occur and less carbon falls back onto the planet. This coupled with a willing desire to do something on the home and business front may just be the start to a genuinely Low Planetary Carbon Footprint.
In coming weeks we will explore the concept of ‘Growing at home – Shopping at home’ – is your green grocery bag an LCF bag? From Community gardens to local farmers markets. Do2 NOW!
Meantime as a small or large business check this site out: www.epa.qld.gov.au/publications?id=1295 you will be surprised how easy it can be started. Go on Do2NOW!!
