Quoting from a recent report cited in the http://www.nutraingredients.com website, research undertaken by the Universities of Wurzburg, Regensburg and Zurich reveals that ‘Anthocyanin-rich extracts from bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) may reduce inflammation in colitis patients and offer a natural alternative to steroids’.
‘A study with lab animals found an extract from bilberry was associated with reductions in the secretion of inflammatory markers in the colon, with the extract outperforming pure bilberries
‘Colitis is inflammation of the colon. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), ulcerative colitis is a relatively uncommon condition, affecting about 100,000 people in England. Women are 30 per cent more likely to develop the condition than their male counterparts. Other inflammatory conditions of the colon include Crohn’s disease. Symptoms of such conditions include abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhoea, and vomiting.
“Bilberries could be an additional nutritional approach for mild to moderate colitis that helps to avoid immunosuppression with the respective side effects, such as infections, in those patients,” he said.
The researchers tested the effects on animal models of acute and chronic colitis and found the histological scores – a measure of the microscopic structure of the animals’ tissue – showed a reduction of almost 50 per cent when animals were fed the bilberry extract containing 1 per cent anthocyanins. Higher histological scores are said to represent sever changes caused by the inflammatory process such as thickening of the wall of the intestine and infiltration of gut tissue by immune cells.
“In this animal model we assed the histological score, which is also the most valid parameter in humans. Therefore the animal model is a good predictor, but nevertheless we need to determine the effect in colitis patients, said the researchers.
This is good news for the AuraGold Farms Ooray Rain Plum powder and VegeShot products.’ We track overseas clinical trials and studies to determine what new information comes out re the effects of the red antioxidant called the anthocyanin’, says Scott Mathias Creator of the AuraGold Farms range of Pure Australian Superfoods.
‘The Ooray Rain Plum is indigenous to Australia and contains as much as 8220mg/100g of rich anthocyanin. Our ever changing focus group of individual customers report back a range of results after taking both products as supplements to their daily food intake and the overwhelming consensus is that they experience a great deal of relief in stomach and intestinal wellbeing’, says Scott Mathias.
‘We are moving towards running our own in depth trials here in Australia but even though there is alot of enthusiasm for high antioxidant Australian superfoods derived from indigenous fruit there is not the state or commonwealth funding to assist in determining beyond anecdotal references that people obtain long term beneficial affects from the anthocyanin.Studies have been done from a high level perspective on some of the Vitamins and minerals in Australian indigenous fruits and foods but not their exact and specific benefits to a human condition’, says Scott Mathias.

Each pouch contains 7 or 30 sealed sachets of Ooray Rain Plum an indigenous Australian SuperFruit recognised for its EXTREMELY high levels of anthocyanins and other antioxidants – Myrtillin and Keracyanin (both linked to managing serotonin levels and blood sugar levels). The Ooray Plum contains 82.2 mg per g using the HPLC analytical method.
‘The indigenous Ooray Rain Plum or davidson’s plum forms the basis of several of our products’, says Scott Mathias Managing Director of LivingBeautiful Pty Ltd, owner of the AuraGold Farms brand. ‘ Davidsonia jerseyana is a nearly extinct variety of Ooray Plum (its Aboriginal name) found only in the North East of Northern NSW, Australia. It is predominantly wild and plantation harvested for only two summer months of the year. In ancient Aboriginal folk lore it is considered a sacred fruit bestowed upon the Widjabul people, part of the Bundjalung Nation, who traditionally reside in this part of New South Wales’, says Scott Mathias.
A range of Ooray Rain Plum based products was available for purchase from the AuraGold Farms at the Exhibition centre including another popular line, the dried Green Papaya Powder with Ooray Rain Plum.
‘This product is high is the living enzyme called Papain and is ideal and safe to use for gut and digestion issues.
100% PURE blend of living Papain enzyme powder with red antioxidants of the Ooray Rain Plum.
Known to assist in the processing of proteins in the stomach, reducing the fermentation process thus reducing heart burn, reflux and bloating.
‘Papaya is known to be a ‘protein eater’ and goes looking for ‘protein hotspots’ such as bacteria, fungus and paracites. In fact papaya or paw paw, as it is sometimes called, has been used for centuries by indigenous civilisations in many tropical parts of the world’.
‘At the festival we offered a range of products safe to use on a variety of conditions’, says Scott Mathias. ‘ Moving into these types of festivals was a departure from our traditional farmers markets presence in South East Queensland – we are widely known at all of Jan Power’s Farmers markets in and around Brisbane and the Noosa Farmers Market. We were excited about extending our reach and meet many aware and health conscious people’, says Scott.

A study undertaken by Austrian academics supports the role beetroot can play as an anti-inflammatory when treating the affects of cancer.
The study entitled :
In vitro Effects of Beet Root Juice on Stimulated and Unstimulated Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells atributed to :
1Christiana Winkler, 1Barbara Wirleitner, 1Katharina Schroecksnadel 2Harald Schennach and 1Dietmar Fuchs 1Division of Biological Chemistry, Biocentre, Innsbruck Medical University, Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of AIDS-Research, Innsbruck 2Central Institute of Blood Transfusion and Immunology, University Hospital.

Results of this study arrived at the following statement of conclusion:
Intake of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants is suggested to reduce the incidence of cancer and coronary heart disease in humans. Exceptional antioxidant activity of beet root extracts has been reported. Likewise in animal models, e.g., extracts of red beetroot Beta vulgaris var. rubra revealed significant tumor inhibitory effects. Red beetroot concentrate is universally permitted as a food ingredient. In this study, effects of a commercially available beetroot juice on freshly isolated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with the mitogens phytohaemagglutinin and concanavalin A were investigated in vitro. Tryptophan degradation and neopterin formation were monitored in culture supernatants to determine effects of test substances on immunobiochemical pathways which both are induced by the pro-inflammatory cytokine interferon-g. Compared to unstimulated cells, the mitogens induced significant formation of neopterin and degradation of tryptophan which is reflected by increasing concentrations of kynurenine together with diminished tryptophan levels in supernatants. Addition of beetroot extracts significantly suppressed these mitogeninduced changes, e.g. the rate of neopterin production as well as tryptophan degradation was dosedependently suppressed. Our data show that beetroot extract is able to counteract pro-inflammatory cascades in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Because inflammation is strongly involved in the development and progression of several clinical conditions including coronary heart disease and cancer, beneficial effect of beetroot extract may relate to this anti-inflammatory capacity.
An independent study undertaken in the US also showed the following in regards to the consumption of juice concentrates:
“In this study, using a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design, of 117 healthy individuals, we showed that a fruit and vegetable concentrate resulted in an elevation in micronutrients (as measured by beta-carotene, vitamin C, and alpha-tocopherol) and reduced systemic inflammatory load,” wrote the researchers.
“Although the long-term implications of these findings are currently unknown, the close relationship between chronic inflammation and poor human health, suggests such a juice concentrate is a beneficial addition to the habitual diet in support of human health,” they added.
After 60 days of consuming the fruit and vegetable capsules, the researchers report a reduction in levels of Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1 (MCP-1) of about 35 per cent, Macrophage Inflammatory Protein 1-beta (MIP-1b) of about 16 per cent, and Regulated upon Activation, Normal T cell Expressed and Secreted (RANTES) levels of about 21 per cent, compared with placebo.
“Systemic inflammatory load in humans is suppressed by consumption of two formulations of dried, encapsulated juice concentrate”

Australian based AuraGold Farms has developed the VegeShot – Daily Wellness Drink containing beetroot, carrot, kale and Ooray plum, itself a source of high levels of detectable anthocyanins also known to assist in reducing inflammation within the cellular structure.
While these overseas studies appear conclusive in their findings it is important to way up the benefits by adopting a regime of personal use which may support these findings.
The following ‘safe to use’ information has also been provided by current users of the AuraGold Farms VegeShot Daily Wellness drink product:
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, anxiety, weight loss, energy levels, jet lag bounce back, sugar cravings, diverticulitis, colitis, celiac, IBS, and colon.
