Endangered Ooray Rain Plum Naturally Fermented Liqueur Goes On-Sale
A collaborative project between Noosa based, AuraGold Farms and Stanthorpe’s, Castle Glen-Australia, makers of Australia’s finest fruit liqueurs, has come to fruition after more than a few thousand years!
Sunday May 2nd saw the Ooray Rain Plum Naturally Fermented Liqueur go on sale from the renowned Noosa Farmers Market and Jan Powers Farmers Market, Brisbane CBD. Wedmesday the 5th of May.
AuraGold Farms sourced freshly harvested fruit back in December 2009 for Castle Glen to produce the first commercially available liqueur made from the endangered davidsonia jerseyana, the New South Wales variety of davidson’s plum known by its Aboriginal name – Ooray. The origins of the Ooray plum are believed to go back tens of thousands of years being a staple, but seasonal food for the local Widjabul people, part of the Bundjalung Nation, who traditionally reside in the plum’s growing area. AuraGold Farms recognises the people of the Widjabul country as the traditional custodians of the lands, waters, animals and plants of that land.
Master Liqueur Maker, Cedric Millar, Owner and Director of Stanthorpe based, Castle Glen is ecstatic about the outcome.
‘ This is the first time we have used a pure Australian indigenous fruit to produce a liqueur and the result is truly amazing’ says Mr Millar. ‘When we received the fresh fruit late last year direct from a combination of wild harvest and plantation picking we honestly didn’t know what to expect and how it would turn out. The result is beyond expectations’ says Cedric Millar.

‘Our goal is to open up new applications and uses for the NSW Ooray Rain Plum and we have succeeded beyond our wildest dreams’, says Scott Mathias.
‘We experienced the same trepidation as Cedric when we first went into this project and relied very heavily on the farmer and harvester located in Eastern Northern New South Wales to bring the fruit in in such a condition as to render it usable for the liqueur project. For this reason we also offer our thanks and gratitude to Tuckombil based, Anthony Hotson for his tireless efforts to meet a strict delivery deadline’.
Tasting somewhere between a Campari and a tarty Drambuie , the Ooray Rain Plum Liqueur, is bound to raise a few eyebrows says Scott Mathias.
‘ It’s not easy doing something like this for the first time but we were determined to use Cedric Millar’s skill and expertise to help drive greater awareness for Australian indigenous fruit products estimated in real terms to be worth less than a conservative $5million dollars a year’, says Scott Mathias.
‘The Ooray Plum’s antioxidant qualities are very pronounced – 8220mg/100g of red anthocyanins and by creating a liqueur provides another opportunity for the health aware customer to take the goodness of nature into their systems at the same time enjoying the experience’.
The release also highlights the abundant potential for Australian Indigenous fruits on the world stage.
‘Would’nt it be a real filip to see this international standard product turn up on the inflight wine list of Qantas, V-Australia or Emirates’, says Scott Mathias. ‘We will just have to somehow get them to see that traditions for quality actually go back thousands of years in the case of the Ooray Rain Plum Liqueur’.
The Castle Glen naturally fermented Ooray Plum liqueur will be sold at various Farmers Markets in the South East of Queensland, Australia including the Noosa Farmers Market, on the Sunshine Coast, held every Sunday and all of Jan Power’s Farmers Markets – CBD Brisbane every Wednesday, Power House – New Farm Park every 2nd and 4th Saturday, Manly Esplanade, every 3rd Saturday, The Mitchelton Market every 1st Sunday from June and the Big Pineapple Growers Market, Nambour, every 1st Saturday from June.

News from the Uk vindicates Australian manufacturer’s decision to launch VegeShot daily Wellness drink using beetroot as its base.
The news from the UK see’s the launch of a 70ml Beetroot shot aimed at the healthy end of the energy drink market. Sold as Beet It, the product is aimed at those comsumers who see the cardio benefits of drinking beetroot juice on a regular basis.
NutraIngredients.com Reports MD of brand owner James White Drinks, James Mallinson as saying the beetroot shot definitely has a place in the market for those wanting an alternative to Red Bull and to Lucozade Alert Plus.
“Unlike some other blood pressure reduction products, which contain dairy peptides, beetroot juice is naturally rich in nitrates, which bacteria in the mouth convert to nitrite. The nitrite is then converted into nitric oxide, which acts like a natural aspirin to prevent blood clots, protect the lining of the blood vessels and lower blood pressure, claimed Mallinson.
Mallinson, who has been working with academics at St Bartholomew’s Hospital to explore the cardiovascular benefits of beetroot juice, changed the name of his product from ‘Heartbeet’ to ‘Beet It’ last year as the original name would have been regarded as an implied health claim under the EU health claims Regulation.

I met you by chance at the Farmers Market on Wednesday 10/2 in Brisbane. I met you on my most desperate of days. My daughter Chloe aged 9 years, has been ill since she was two with tummy problems.

I am always guarded as its early days yet in getting her gut back into shape but at least this is a good start. I suggest maintaining the usage to what ever you are currently doing and remaining vigilant on the fats, sugars, dairy and refined front…which I know you are doing already.
Im so glad.. really glad she has taken some new steps and that over time she will gather her strength again and lead a normal life.
